Century Farmers who participate in quilt trails, including the Appalachian Quilt Trail. will be the special honorees at a luncheon on Friday. Combining traditional farming practices with agritourism and heritage tourism, these farm families support the quilt trails that wind through several counties. Special guest speaker for the luncheon will be Bythe Semmer of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation in Washington, D.C. Semmer is a former CHP graduate assistant and her family farm is the McMahan Century Farm, founded in 1850 in Sevier County.
The very popular, Dr. Ron Hanson from Nebraska will be back to talk about the issues of farm transfer frm one generation to the next. In addition to farm estate planning, the conference will also provide information on things farmers can do today to improve their profitability and viability including the new market for switchgrass. For the local elected officials, this conference will have presentations on planning techniques and programs from neighboring states and communities that have worked to help them support and protect agricultural production and businesses in their communities.
