The “Between the Lines: Reading about the Civil War” book group, sponsored by the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area and Linebaugh Library, will discuss Shiloh: A Novel, by Shelby Foote, on Thursday, January 19 and 26, at 7:00 p.m. at the Heritage Center, 225 West College Street, Murfreesboro.  All are welcome.

Foote published Shiloh almost forty years before he rose to national prominence in Ken Burns’s PBS documentary on the Civil War.  Shiloh takes readers back to the pivotal two-day battle that took place in Hardin County on the west bank of the Tennessee River early in April 1862.  Shiloh’s appalling carnage of close to 24,000 casualties shocked Americans to the core and foretold the bloodletting at Antietam, Stones River, and Gettysburg.
