Dr. Carroll Van West, director of the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area, tells the story of how Federal troops occupied the Rutherford County Courthouse and square in March 1862, until July when Nathan Bedford Forrest’s Confederate forces attacked and forced Col. William W. Duffield of the 9th Michigan Infantry to surrender.
