Rachael FinchRachael Finch is the Civil War Projects Coordinator for the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area administered by the Center for Historic Preservation at Middle Tennessee State University. In her current position, she researches and writes text for the Civil War Trails Program, a partnership between the Heritage Area and the Departments of Tourism and Transportation for the state of Tennessee. Finch works with local heritage and preservation organizations in Franklin, Tennessee, meeting and preparing for the upcoming Sesquicentennial event to be held in Franklin November 2014. Finch will be doing field research on several African American family histories in Franklin and Williamson County that will serve as the building blocks for a collective history on how local African Americans lived during the Civil War and Reconstruction period.

Finch received her B.A. in History with a minor in Political Science from Metropolitan State University in Denver, Colorado. She received her M.A. in Public History with an emphasis in Historic Preservation from Middle Tennessee State University. Her thesis entitled: “Battles On The Home Front: Battlefield Reclamation and Interpretive Challenges at Historic Sites,” examines the battlefield at Franklin, juxtaposed with the Vicksburg National Military Park and details how past preservation efforts continue to lead a narrow view of current interpretations of the Civil War whole story. Finch’s research interests include cultural landscapes, architectural history, Antebellum, Civil War, Reconstruction, women’s history, and African American history. Her concentration on these topics continues to inspire Finch to promote and blend a fully interpreted story with historic preservation.
