New Emancipation Marker in Franklin

Author name

The Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area helped sponsor a new marker in Franklin about Union general Gordon Granger and emancipation. Gen. Granger was stationed in Franklin before his now-famous proclamation of freedom for enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865. Laura Holder represented the Heritage Area at the marker dedication at Pinkerton Park. The dedication took place at the Williamson County African American Heritage Society’s seventeenth-annual Juneteenth celebration.
