Trials, Triumphs, & Transformations

Trials, Triumphs, and Transformations: Tennesseans’ Search for Citizenship, Community, and Opportunity has been designed to focus on Tennessee’s history between the end of the American Civil War (1865) and the end of World War II (1945), with special emphasis on the meaning of citizenship and how that meaning has changed over time. The stories to be explored through the objects, songs, photographs, paintings, and documents of this website are often those of challenges and obstacles placed before those who pursued the rights and benefits of citizenship.

Designed with teachers and students in mind, the digital collection has been organized to make
images of historical documents, works of art, and material culture objects easily accessible. As they are created, a list of lesson plans corresponding to the collection materials will also be added.
